Job Summary
NREL Communications and Public Affairs office is seeking an experienced information analyst/taxonomist to lead efforts to expand the discoverability of content across a variety of NREL enterprise applications including websites and databases. The role will also serve as information manager for one or more applications.

The successful candidate will have experience developing controlled vocabularies (thesauri) for scientific and technical information for web content, photos, graphics, videos, or publications. The successful candidate will be collaborative, adaptable to a dynamic environment, detail-oriented, organized, and have a strong desire to learn.

Duties include

  • Researching and becoming an expert in NREL technical information and terminology.
  • Collaboratively developing controlled vocabularies, applying controlled vocabulary to various enterprise applications, and indexing/tagging content.
  • Developing procedures and documentation that ensure terminology is being applied correctly, and formulating and conducting searches to verify the effectiveness of vocabularies in supporting search retrieval.
  • Maintaining and updating controlled vocabularies based on evolving user behavior, terminology changes, and effective search retrieval.
  • Performing as information manager for NREL's Image Gallery ( - a repository containing over 30,000 images related to renewable energy and energy efficiency accessible to NREL staff and the public. Serving as the NREL expert for content in this repository, taking ownership of the content, tagging images, and ensuring that metadata is correct and the content is easily discoverable.
  • Managing the site search engine used on the NREL public and internal websites.
  • Coordinating and communicating regularly with team members to ensure high quality work product.
  • Working closely with application developers.
  • Staying current on industry best practices.

  • A master's degree in Library Science or Information Management or equivalent
  • Experience in managing content collections in search tools
  • Experience with search engine optimization (SEO)
  • Experience with digital asset management and best practices, e.g. digital repositories, digital objects, digitization, metadata, taxonomy development
  • Proficient in formulating and conducting general and advanced searches
  • Experience with developing faceted search filters
  • Demonstrated success managing customer relationships
  • Ability to function independently and also collaboratively to identify and accomplish goals

  • Excellent communication skills

Required Education, Experience, and Skills
Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Considerable knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Strong leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.
